In this video, I discuss three different ways to blur text in Camtasia (Transcript below)
Capturing images of your screen is a great way to share information. But sometimes, there may be information in the video that is personal, confidential or that you don’t wish to share. Perhaps your don’t want to display your password when providing a demo on logging into a site. Or maybe you want to blur out the entire background except for a specific area. Or maybe you want to blue out someone’s face entirely.
That’s where Camtasia’s blur tools come in. They’re located under Annotations and the Blur & Highlight options are under the fourth icon from the left.
So here I have a small clip of me talking. If I wanted to blur our my face, I’d choose the last icon on the bottom row. This creates a pixelated effect over parts of the clip. I’ll just click and drag it onto my face. Then I can drag the sizing handles until all the area that I want to hid is hidden.
Now if I wanted to blur out the entire background, except for my face, I’ll drag the first icon on the bottom row onto my image. Again, I can adjust the sizing handles to set which areas I want to display. This is excellent for removing unnecessary or distracting content from the clip.In this clip, I could also blur out everything except for a row of shelves by doing the same thing for the row of shelves that I want to show.
Note that you an adjust the blur amounts from the Properties panel. If you don’t see it, click the Properties button.
So I’m going to delete that.
Let’s take a look at this next clip. Here we have come confidential employee information that I want to blur out. In this case, I want to blur out the employees date of birth and social security number. We’ll start with the date of birth.
First, I’m going to set the playhead where the information is located that I want to hide. Then, I’m going to choose blur tool in the middle icon on the bottom row and drag it there. So now I’ll need to move it over the information I want to conceal so I’ll need to adjust the sizing handles as well. I’ll want to drag this to the right until the confidential information no longer displays on the screen.
Now let’s blur out the social security number as well. So we’ll do the same thing. Click the blur icon in the middle of the second row and then drag to the area of the clip where the information that I want to conceal is located. And then we’ll have to reposition and resize the blur annotation.
Here’s a fun little tip: If you want to highlight a specific portion of your clip by blackening out everything else out, use the second annotation in the first row. So I’m going to drag this over the “Hourly Wage Schedule” area. Everything disappears except for the area I want to highlight.
So that is how to blur text out in Camtasia.
